Charlotte & Rebecca, Founders, The Look
Charlotte and Rebecca are both corporate lawyers living in Hong Kong and founders of The Look. They want to encourage women to bring fashion (and fun) into the office and break out of the boring corporate-clothing stereotype. They work long hours and are dressing for work most of the time but brands and fashion blogs are so focused on weekend fashion or creating looks that just aren't office-friendly - hence the reason they started The Look.
About Charlotte, Rebecca and The Look
Tell us a little about you and your background.
We are both corporate lawyers in the same U.S. law firm and work three offices down from one another so are office neighbors! We are originally from London but both transferred to Hong Kong as we love the culture and vibrancy of Asia. The lifestyle here is great and when we're not working we love to hit the beach, go on a hike or head to one of Hong Kong's famous champagne brunches. Since launching The Look we’re also spending most weekends taking photos!
Tell us about The Look and how you came up with the idea.
The Look is all about outfits that work for the office, but are still fun and stylish. We work long hours and are dressing for work most of the time but brands and fashion blogs are so focused on weekend fashion or creating looks that just aren't office-friendly. We want The Look to encourage women to bring fashion (and fun!) into the office and break out of the boring corporate-clothing stereotype. We all love a black dress but not when it feels like a work uniform! A good outfit can really change your outlook on a day and give you a real confidence boost.
Let's Talk Business
What is the one thing you believe has helped you succeed and what advice would you give to someone wanting to do the same job?
Being unashamedly ourselves! We are both strong, individual personalities and being true to who we are has definitely helped us in our careers. There's always pressure to be a “corporate cutout", so find ways to stand out and express your individuality - it won’t go unnoticed. We also remind ourselves on a daily basis not to stress!
What makes you feel powerful, where do you get your motivation and who inspires you?
Christina Aguilera's 'Come on Over Baby' and our feisty mothers.
What is it like being friends, business partners and colleagues?
Having a close friend at work is a real gift - especially when you're stressed and need to vent! It also means that when we aren't busy, we can work on The Look. We've had a bunch of colleagues give us strange looks when we're doing "photo shoots" in the office lobby. The Look has meant that we spend even more time together but we love doing it so it seems we're not tired of each other yet!
How would you describe your business style?
We both like to be comfortable at all times, especially given our unpredictable working hours. We tend to wear outfits that can be dressed up or down so if we have a client meeting we can throw on a blazer and some heels and be good to go. We love being creative with our work wardrobes and we take real joy in picking out outfits that are on trend and bring something fun and unusual into our grey, windowless, offices!
What advice would you give those dressing for a new job?
Always test the water first. Our office has quite a laidback dress policy but when meeting clients we are expected to follow a strict dress policy. Our advice is that it's best not to go wild with the outfit choice on the first day! Comfort and confidence are key, so wear an outfit that you look and feel great in and it will show.
What trends do you like to wear in the corporate fashion space?
We both love statement skirts as they are such an easy way to brighten up an outfit - Never Fully Dressed and Realisation Par are our go-tos. Our Instagram features styling videos on how to dress them to create multiple office-friendly looks which can also take you effortlessly from work to play. Block heels are another great staple as they are so comfortable but stylish too.
